Jan Mayen Island slowly emerges out of the swirling Atlantic mist, but we only get the barest glimpse of the snow on the 2277m active volcano.
The only inhabitants of "Olonkin City" are about 18 Norwegian meteorologists and their support staff.  A weekly supply plane lands at the airstrip unless the weather is too bad or the fog too thick.  An occasional cruise ship tries, but often fails, to land passengers.  The cannon belonged to Dutch whalers in the 18th century.  The tree trunk washed ashore, there are no trees on Jan Mayen.
It's long way to anywhere.
