Port Douglas was established in 1877 when gold was discovered nearby. It was a boom town and at its peak had 12,000 inhabitants and 27 hotels. By the 1960s it had dwindled to a fishing village with a population of 100. An entrepreneur built a holiday resort there in the 1980s and since then tourism has boomed.
