Syuru, Indonesia
Syuru is a village of Asmat people in the Lorentz National Park and World Heritage Site on the Aswet Estuary of Papua Province, Indonesia. The total Asmat population is estimated to be about 70,000. They have one of the most well-known woodcarving traditions in the Pacific and their art is sought by collectors worldwide. We were greeted by warrior canoes, allowed to witness a traditional ceremonial performance and to visit the men's longhouse. Even in this remote part of the world, the 21st century has arrived in the shape of mobile phones.
